Whitewash Side Table

Over the weekend, I stopped in o Roost to start looking for some fall items. I saw this beautiful white washed buffet there and immediately wanted to try that technique myself. 

This little side table found it's way into my car at Goodwill one day a few weeks ago. Immediately, I fell in love with it's petite size and all the great detail. Not to mention, it was almost in mint condition. 

It had that bright orange oak look, so I was curious how the whitewash would look with that. I started looking on Pinterest for blogs that go over how to whitewash. I stumbled upon Orphan with Makeup's blog post and started from there. From my coffee table project, I had some left over Velvet Finishes paint in Rococo. I mixed this three parts water and one part paint. 

I started applying it with a brush and then wiping it off with a wet rag. This literally wiped off all the paint. So after that trial and error, I applied it with a paint brush very lightly. One section would dry pretty quickly and I would move onto the next section.

Here is how it looked after one coat. I love how it toned down the bright orange oak color and gave it such a pretty color. Also love how the wood grain still shows through.

Once I brought it upstairs into natural light, I fell in love! 

Now, I am trying to figure out what bigger piece I can try whitewashing on next, stay tuned.

Farmhouse Side Table

You've probably noticed that I haven't posted in a few months on here. 

I have still been finding pieces and projects, but have not had much motivation to actually work on them. For this, I am attributing it to my new real-world job that I started last November. It has certainly been keeping me busy, but for the rest of the year, I am making a dedicated effort to work on projects for the rest of the year. When I was really working on this, I couldn't wait to get out of work to go home to work on this. I missed that little bit of excitement in my nights and now it is back!

Anyways, so with this table, found it as a local Goodwill. Like I do with all my projects, I fall in line with all the details, original hardware and great lines. It was also marked as solid mahogany. It was pretty scratched up, had collected quite a few dust bunnies and looked like some sort of liquid has been dropped on it. 

So to start, I started with my Shop-Vac (Christmas gift from my dad from 2014, thank you Dad!) and go rid of the bunnies and spider webs. Next, I used mixed TSP and hot water to wash it down. I was really hoping this would clean whatever liquid had dropped on this table so I wouldn't get any bleed through in the paint. Then, I lightly sanded with 150 grit sand paper and gave it one final sweep with the Shop-Vac. Here she was before I started painting. 

My eye usually only sees in neutral colors, so of course I wanted to go white for this table. I decided to use Behr's New House White. For my projects, I have been using Behr paint for quite some time. Behr Premium Plus Ultra has always been my preference for the specific product, in hopes that it will really block stains. For this project, I wanted chalk paint so I could distress it. I used the same recipe that I have always used, one part water and one part Plaster of Paris mixed first, then three parts paint. Works like a charm every time.

So I start spraying with my Home Right Finish Max sprayer and get the first coat on. Within a few minutes, I could already see the bleed through [insert sad face here]. From my experience, there are just some stains that come through no matter what. That is when I go to Zinsser Shellac primer in the spray can form. I have used this on multiple projects and it has blocked every single stain, absolutely love it and highly recommend. They occasionally go on sale at Home Depot, so I usually try to get quite a few when they do. 

Then, the table just needed two more coats of paint to get full coverage. Here is a sneak peak after I did some slight distressing:

One part of this table that I did not take pictures of before/during/after that I am sad about is the hardware. It was so tarnished, but had such great character. So one morning as I was getting ready for work, I put the pieces in a bowl and sprayed on the liquid form of Barkeepers Friend. It sat for probably about 20 minutes. Then I washed it all off with a scrubby and couldn't believe how the hardware looked brand new again. Pictures next time for sure. 

Then to seal the table, I sprayed on General Finish HPTC in Satin. Here is the final table, I absolutely love it. Can't wait to start on some more projects again.

The Perfectly Imperfect Side Table

This month, I got to participate in The Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest that was sponsored by one of my favorite paint companies Country Chic Paint. The theme for this contest is Bling Bling.

 We received one pint of their all-in-one decor paints, one pint of a metallic cream and a short handle paint brush.

I decided to try one of their limited 2016 colors in Sea Storm and Silver Bullet for the metallic cream.

I found this super cute little table at a local Goodwill recently and knew it would be the perfect piece. This table just called my name. It looked very handmade and whoever made it put a lot of time and effort into it and I wanted to give it new life!

This table was hand nailed together and I am still amazed at how they got the second bottom shelf to fit in there. So I brought her home and decided to paint her first. I am a huge Country Chic Paint fan. Here is a link to another blog post where I used their Vanilla Frosting color to redo my most favorite Cedar Hope Chest of all time. Their paint is incredible, it has great coverage and goes on well to any piece.

Here is the progress after one coat. I put one more coat on in addition to the first coat of the all in one decor paint in Sea Storm. Then the next step was to tape off the legs. I was envisioning a shabby chic/farmhouse silver dipped look for this cute little table.

This was my first time using their metallic cream. I was expecting it be more of a paint consistency, but Country Chic is very accurate in describing it as a cream. I applied two coats with a brush.

And here is the perfectly imperfect table all finished. I just love all the cute detail of it and seeing how much hard work someone put into building this table. The table fits perfect in my landing area of my stairs. Can't wait to find some new cute decorations for it in it's new home.

Original Elegance with Pure & Original Paint

This month I got to participate in the Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest again! It was so fun, I got to try a brand new paint, Pure and Original's Clasico paint line with the theme of Original Elegrance.  This is their chalk based paint made with natural pigments with a matte powdery look. I decided on two colors, Atria and Soft Asparagus.

I decided to try this paint on this adorable side table I picked up from a local thrift shop. 

I was tempted to leave the detailed sides, which I tried at first. I tried painting the entire piece and leaving those for the end and a small paint brush. In the end, I decided to paint the entire piece.

 The paint was amazing on the metal detailed parts. It went on so well and only required about two coats for everything. Here are the final pictures.

How do you think it turned out? I am in love with it! This was such a great new product to try and I am so happy with the results.

Painting with a Sprayer

Well, it finally happened. I bought this sprayer from Amazon a few weeks ago and finally got it out and painted this past weekend. It is amazing, I wish I would have done it so much sooner. My favorite furniture bloggers all spray their furniture for the most part and I finally decided to get it a try myself. 

I started testing it out first with cardboard and water to get a feel for how it sprayed and the different settings. 

Once I thought I had a feel for it, I thinned out some eggshell black Behr paint I have had for awhile from the Home Depot oops rack. It suggested to thin it down about 10-15%. with water. Once I had the paint thinned down, I poured it in the container and got my garage and the piece ready.

I was so nervous at first and I don't know why. Once the first coat was finished I waited a bit to see how it started drying and it looked amazing. It was so great not to see any brush strokes and I think it took me about 8 minutes to get the first coat on. 

I let this dry overnight and then did another coat early on Sunday and then staged it late in the afternoon while the sun was still out for pictures. I am still learning, but overall the first piece went well. I also did a chair since I had mixed way too much black paint, The set/up and cleaning take the most time, I am still trying to master the cleaning process. I thought I had it all cleaned out and then some black paint still dripped out of it an hour later. And I even bought the cleaner that attaches to the sink/hose as well. Hmmmm. Anyways, I would highly recommend this product. It saves time and creates a flawless finish on furniture. 

Anyone have any tips for cleaning?
